The Montessori Elementary program goal is to inspire students to become independent learners and to explore different academic and cultural areas to help understand and appreciate their world. The Elementary environment consists of age appropriate materials that help the children become responsible and accountable for their use of time, accuracy of their own work, and length of focus in different subject areas. The adults in the classroom are available to help guide the child, but the materials and the child are key to learning and exploring. Each child has an individualized work plan.
The Elementary curriculum consists of several different areas of study:
•
Language Arts- reading (silently and aloud), writing (creative writing and journaling), grammar (parts of speech and function), spelling, handwriting (print and cursive), and foreign language.
•
Mathematics- the Montessori math materials lead the child to develop a concrete to abstract understanding of math concepts. The children work on addition, multiplication, division, subtraction, skip counting, fractions, common multiples and divisors, squaring, geometry, algebra, time, and money.
•
Physical and Biological Sciences- the universe, solar system, matter, botany, zoology, and biology.
•
Geography- continents, countries, cultures, flags, maps, landforms, biomes, geology and state capitals.
•
Fine Arts- art using different types of media, music, Montessori bells and tone bars, singing, and drama.
•
Physical Education- movement class, yoga, games and sports to help with cooperation and sportsmanship.
